HE PAID A DEBT THAT I COULD NEVER REPAY

The kitchen table was covered with canceled checks, bank statements, tentative budgets, and a pile of bills The floor was littered with wadded up pieces of paper signifying the failures of the afternoon. Dejectedly, Harold stared at the calculator which continued to reflect the same verdict - not enough money to pay the debts. The bottom was that for the third consecutive month he couldn't make the house payment. Foreclosure would be initiated the next week. He wondered, "Where will we go?" "What will the kids do?" "What will our families think?"

Just then, the door bell rang. As he opened the door, a stranger with an engaging smile said, "I understand that you need money in order to save your house. Here is $75, 000 as a gift ' no need for you to pay it back." Harold thanked him, put the money in the drawer, and returned to the kitchen table to continue searching and considering a way to save his home. Two weeks later the family was evicted, two months later Harold was arrested for stealing in order to feed his family.

We can all see the ridiculous nature of this story. Why would a person refuse to use the resources that he has been given in order to save his house? Yet, millions of people continue to ignore the gracious gift of God's son in order to escape eternal condemnation. Wallowing in spiritual despair, they have shelved the one real answer to all of their problems - Jesus.

Is it pride or stubbornness that keeps us from accepting the grace of God? Do we feel that we must save ourselves before we can allow God to save us? Christ has come and is knocking at the door of our heart. Will we respond to His offer of salvation, or will we refuse and thus be evicted from the spiritual blessings of heaven? The choice is yours!!!

For His Cause,
Tim Woodward
