Find Yourself

One of the central characters of the "Dobie Gillis" TV show in the 1960's was Maynard, a "beatnik" with beads, sandals, and goatee who avoided work at all cost. He was more comical than intelligent. In one show, Maynard informed Dobie that he was planning to do what many rock stars were doing in that era — make a pilgrimage to the Far East to consult with a guru about the meaning of life. Maynard did his best to explain to Dobie why he felt he needed to speak with an ancient wise man and find out who he really was.

Dobie finally said to him with candor, "Maynard, you will never find yourself on a mountain in Tibet."

"Why not?" Maynard asked.

Dobie replied, "Because you didn't lose yourself on a mountain in Tibet!"

A "new us" isn't to be found on a mountain somewhere, or in any other change of location. We find ourselves not by searching outside ourselves, but searching within. Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). When we take a good look at ourselves we will discover that the only place to "find ourselves" is in Christ. You don't need to go anywhere but to His Word to find that out!

For His Cause,
Tim Woodward
